JIM'S MUSIC SHOP Jim Ricks 8
Marion Street, P.O. Box #1277 Business Hours: Saturday 9:00am to 5:00pm
Jim's Music is located at 8 Marion Street, next door to Eldora's Books, Etc., and across the street from Cadiz Police Department. The store is owned by Jim Ricks: life-long Trigg County resident, former Mayor and City Council member, colon cancer survivor, local radio personality, and music lover. Jim opened his music store about 20 years ago, after retiring from a civil service job at Ft. Campbell. He says he decided to open the store because of his love for music. "I grew up on a farm in Linton, and can remember neighbors and family gathering on our porch to play music at night. My mom played guitar and sang," says Jim. "I play everything a little bit - all string instruments, anyway - but nothing very well. It's just a love of mine; a hobby."
Jim's Music sells stringed instruments of all kinds, plus accessories and sheet music. Music lessons are also offered there: two 12-week sessions per year. "Mr. Charlie" Stamper teaches fiddle and violin lessons on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Scotty Henson teaches bongo, mandolin and guitar lessons on Saturdays. By far, though, Jim's Music is most well-known for it's Saturday gatherings - or "Jim Jams," as they have been nicknamed. On Saturdays, Jim's is packed to capacity with musicians of all ages, from everywhere, picking, singing and clogging - and many who just come to listen. The music is mostly bluegrass, country, and gospel - "old time music," Jim calls it. Anyone and everyone is welcome - to come in and play, or to just sit and listen.
